    LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
      Focus Ages

Senior Adults

You are clicking on this page for many different reasons. Perhaps, you were curious about what you would find. Perhaps, you are concerned that the church is no longer utilizing senior adults in leadership capacities. Perhaps, you are hoping to find new opportunities to develop your own leadership skills. Or, maybe you are just browsing. Regardless of your reason, let us assure you God has a plan for your life regardless of your age. We want to help you grow in your own development as a leader. Hey, check it out and let us know what you think!

How can I keep growing as a leader?

  • The Holy Spirit is dynamic and continues to lead us as we mature in him. Perhaps, you need a refresher course on what your gifts are today and how those gifts can be applied in ministry. Contact us for the Discover Your Spiritual Gifts material that can help you discover new ministry options.
  • Read some cutting edge leadership books that can expand your growth as a leader. Two recommendations would be The Leadership Challenge by James Kouzes and Barry Posner, published by Jossey-Bass, and Leadership is an Art by Max DePree, published by Dell Publishing.
  • Attend a valuable workshop offered by our partners or by us. These include Intimate Life leadership conferences, INJOY Ministries, and our North American Convention; these will continue to stimulate your discovery process.
  • Go back to school! Perhaps you will want to consider one of the satellite courses offered by our colleges or School of Theology.

What can I do now as a senior to encourage new leaders?

  • One of the commodities you might have that other leaders do not have is the resource of time. An invaluable way to use that time is by mentoring younger leaders. They may not come to you and may need you to approach them.
  • Become a prayer partner for younger leaders. We are currently searching for prayer partners for our youth pastors who need support as they minister with young people. Contact Andy Stephenson if you are interested.
  • Network with younger leaders by attending state/provincial/regional events and intentionally encouraging them.
  • Visit the campuses of Church of God schools and spend time with students. These emerging leaders need the wisdom you can bring their way.
  • Stay involved in the local church ministry! God is not finished with you yet!

What are some resources that can help me to be a life-long learner?

  • Check out the other senior adult pages on this Web site.
  • Plan to attend one of the Senior Adult Ministry workshops/conferences at the North American Convention each year.
  • Plan to attend the Retreat to the Cove sponsored by Mass Media of Church of God Ministries.
  • Books for senior adult pastors/lay leaders and for seniors interested in their own faith development can found on our senior adult resource page.
